John O Groats – Pyrenees cycle challenge!

Jon McGee, a lifelong Bristol Rugby Fan (doesn’t miss a game) has decided to do a 2000 mile bike ride to on our behalf. He also plays for local side Bristolians and of course for PROPS Barbarians. Jon explains more about the massive challenge below.

“The route for the bike ride came about after a rather rash, drunken announcement at the end of last year’s Bristol to Bordeaux trip.  At the end of trip party in Bordeaux I stated that I wanted to cycle Lands End to John O’Groats for PROPS this year.  However, because I cycled on to Toulouse from Bordeaux over the following 2 days last year I decided I would try to extend the French part of the route for this year.  So having looked at the maps I decided on the following:

John O’Groats to the France/Spanish border in the Pyrenees.  Approximately 2000 miles over 20ish days with a road race thrown in half way down Scotland.

The details of the trip are:
Depart John O’Groats on Thursday 13th May.

Arrive at Pitlochry in Perthshire on Saturday 15th May to take part in the Caladonia Etape (an 81 mile road race) the following day.  Hopefully there will be a few PROPS riders in this race as it is the only road race in Britain where the roads are closed to all traffic and it will be a great final training session for the Bristol to Bordeaux trip.

Depat Pitlochry on Monday morning and over the next 6 days pass through Linlithgow, Peeble, Hawick, Middlesborough, York, Nottingham, Moreton-in-the- Marsh, arriving back in Bristol on or around sunday/monday 24th May.

After a couple of rest days and organising the signage for the first day of the B2B trip, the trip continues with up to 50 other riders on the Bristol to Bordeaux trip. Once in France we will pass through Rennes, Nantes, La Rochelle and arrive in Bordeaux on Sunday 30th May.

After some serious celebrations in Bordeaux I will continue down to Mont-de-Marsan, Toulouse and finally reach the spanish border on Thursday 3rd June just outside a town called St.Girons at an altitude of 2477 m.

From the border it is a ride back to Toulouse for a short rest and then a flight home.”

We can’t thank Jon enough for making such huge efforts on our behalf
